Matthew Good plays the Status Lounge

My favourite artist, Canadian to boot, played in town on Canada Day. As an added bonus I was asked to be a second shooter for my regular assistant Dan.
I have photographed over 50 bands over the years for various publications and venues but this time was very different. Being a second shooter in a small venue meant that I didn’t get the prime shooting location in front of the stage and I needed to get a different perspective than Dan. I positioned myself on house left/stage right which is opposite to how I normally would shoot. This is the weaker side to shoot Matthew from as you don’t get to capture the concentration on his face as he is looking down at the fretboard. On the bright side, being the second shooter I could pick my spots on when to shoot and try to get something a little different.
Was it my best concert shoot, honestly, no. But I got to enjoy two of my biggest loves, photography and live music.

UOIT Banners Installed In Downtown Oshawa

We have recently worked with the Communications and Marketing Department at UOIT to produce portraits of selected students to be featured on streetlight banners installed along King Street, Bond Street, Athol Street and Simcoe Street. The banners are to mark the Downtown Oshawa University District and feature fourteen UOIT students representing each of the seven faculties at UOIT.
A special thanks goes out to many people. To all of the students who participated in this project, it was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy your photos as much as we do! To Jo-Anne, Heather and the Communications and Marketing staff for their outstanding work and to the City of Oshawa and the Downtown Oshawa Business Improvement Area for partnering with UOIT on the installation of these banners.
Here are a few photos of my photos!

Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals First Round Selection In 2010 OHL Priority Selection

The OHL held it’s annual Priority Selection on Saturday May 1, 2010 and the Oshawa Generals selected Scott Laughton of the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget team with the third overall pick. When Scott arrived to meet the team officials later that morning I had an opportunity to photograph him in the Generals dressing room. It was a busy day for Scott and his parents who accompanied him so I didn’t want to monopolize too much of his time with photographs. Two lighting set ups were made in advance so he just had to walk in and we were ready to shoot. In my mind I wanted to focus on two things, Scott’s face and the Generals logo. As much as I love the design of the dressing room, which puts even some NHL rooms to shame, I didn’t want the room to distract from the new face of the team. One spotlight on the carpet logo, one on Scott’s face and a little backlighting is all that was needed. The second setting was in the hallway to the dressing room, a very tight space with a round glass logo as the background. It is like trying to photograph into a mirror and not see your reflection. I lighting nightmare but thanks to my voice-activated lightstand Dan, who managed to squeeze himself into a small corner, we managed to make some nice images. It would have been so much easier to just throw a whole bunch of light into the hallway but it would have looked rather boring. I love the spotlight effect, I use it a lot to separate the subject from the background. And for the shooters that believe Photoshop is a verb, this effect was done in-camera. No vignetting allowed!

Jeff Hayes and The Olympic Torch

I recently had the privilege of photographing Oshawa Generals captain Jeff Hayes with his Olympic Torch. Hayes took part in the Torch Relay on December 16, 2009 leading up to the 2010 Olympic Games.
This is one of those shoots where prior planning is an absolute must. I knew how I wanted Jeff to pose, but the real difficulty is in lighting a flag properly. If you light a flag with frontal lighting you get a large amount of reflectance off the sheer fabric. Since you can actually see through the material, you can’t just throw light onto it from behind. You have to create a wall of light to give even illumination. In this case, creating a wall approximately 40′x20′.
Some of the greatest requirements to be a successful photographer is having the ability to visualize the image you want to convey, and to foresee technical issues that will separate your images from those of an amateur. This may seem like a simple photo shoot but in reality our crew spent 4 hours in planning, from scouting the best location to hold the shoot to testing the opacity of the flag material. Add in a 3 hour set up of the flag and black curtains to block off the stray light and many test images, not to mention the shoot itself, these images took over 8 hours to produce.

Was it worth the effort? After all, any GWC (guy with camera) can just stick a flash on the camera and fire away.
My answer is absolutely! Would you want a photographer to cut corners on your once in a lifetime shoot? I didn’t think so.
