Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals First Round Selection In 2010 OHL Priority Selection

The OHL held it’s annual Priority Selection on Saturday May 1, 2010 and the Oshawa Generals selected Scott Laughton of the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget team with the third overall pick. When Scott arrived to meet the team officials later that morning I had an opportunity to photograph him in the Generals dressing room. It was a busy day for Scott and his parents who accompanied him so I didn’t want to monopolize too much of his time with photographs. Two lighting set ups were made in advance so he just had to walk in and we were ready to shoot. In my mind I wanted to focus on two things, Scott’s face and the Generals logo. As much as I love the design of the dressing room, which puts even some NHL rooms to shame, I didn’t want the room to distract from the new face of the team. One spotlight on the carpet logo, one on Scott’s face and a little backlighting is all that was needed. The second setting was in the hallway to the dressing room, a very tight space with a round glass logo as the background. It is like trying to photograph into a mirror and not see your reflection. I lighting nightmare but thanks to my voice-activated lightstand Dan, who managed to squeeze himself into a small corner, we managed to make some nice images. It would have been so much easier to just throw a whole bunch of light into the hallway but it would have looked rather boring. I love the spotlight effect, I use it a lot to separate the subject from the background. And for the shooters that believe Photoshop is a verb, this effect was done in-camera. No vignetting allowed!
